ARCA demands a new approach for the Terrassa del Baluard

A call to political responsibility

Recently, the Association for the Revitalization of Old Centers (ARCA) has sent a letter to the president of the Balearic Government, Marga Prohens, asking her to reconsider the project of the planned terrace at the Baluard de Sant Pere. This initiative seeks to preserve aesthetics and public interest in the face of projects that could represent an invasion of local heritage.

The impact of new facilities on heritage

ARCA emphasizes that the future terrace, with its ‘beach club’ design, would seriously compromise the atmosphere of the Baluard, which has been rehabilitated with public funds. The association argues that allowing a terrace with a permanent design in contradiction with the existing regulations on terraces in Palma, would create an unacceptable precedent.

An opportunity to readjust the project

After the removal of illegal works, ARCA considers it the ideal time to rethink the conditions of the terrace. This moment is key not only to correct past mistakes, but also to ensure that the decisions taken reflect the interest of the citizens of Palma and the Balearic Islands.

Calling for dialogue

ARCA urges the president to promote a dialogue space where alternative solutions are examined that are transparent and that respect the landscape. The terrace proposal should not prioritize the exclusivity of a business, created for a restricted audience, but should serve the community and visitors who want to enjoy the landscape.

The Government’s responsibility

Since the Government, the Council and the City Council are the patrons of the Fundació Museu Baluard, RXCA highlights their co-responsibility in the decisions that have led to this situation. The current authorities now have the obligation to rectify the mistakes of the past and guarantee the common good.

A sustainable future for the Baluard

The association ends its letter by reminding that the Terrassa del Baluard must not replicate the image of a beach club, but must be designed to be a space at the service of the public. A space that contributes to Palma’s cultural wealth and that respects the area’s nature and heritage.

ARCA expects the president to act bravely and firmly. If the necessary changes are not implemented, the association will not be dissociated from legal actions to defend the public interest.
