A tribute to the victims of the Dana
On March 7, during the opening of Arc 2025, artist Lluci Juan made a powerful statement using Paiporta’s mud, collected after the devastating flood. This action was not only an artistic act, but also a tribute to the victims and an alert cry on the situation of the artists in the region.
The precariousness of the cultural sector
Lluci Juan has shown the precariousness that affects the cultural sector, which has worsened due to the Dana. In his words: “Before the flood we were already in a situation of vulnerability, but now the losses are devastating, with the shutdown of activities that directly impacts our present and professional future.”
The impact of the stream in the community
The artist completed his action at 19:50, coinciding with the moment when the flood had left the population of Paiporta in ruins. In this context, the judge in charge of the investigation reported that there had already been fatalities, thus emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.
A message that transcends arco
Lluci Juan’s project has resonated with the demands of the civil society of Valencia, which demands political responsibilities for what has happened. This artistic intervention has become a reminder of the urgency of protecting the cultural sector in times of crisis, with a message that has reached beyond the walls of ARCO 2025.
A journey through Valencian art
After his performance, Juan visited several art galleries in Valencia, including the RTVE space, where he could contemplate the work ‘Mapas’ by Misael del Rosario. This installation, with a height of 2.80 meters, symbolized the arrival of the mud, providing a visual perspective on the catastrophe.
ARCO: a platform with limitations
For Juan, Arc represents a valuable opportunity, but also a reflection of the limitations that many artists face. “It is a high quality fair, but access is restricted, and even those who exhibit it are difficult to maintain their activities,” he commented, highlighting the precariousness of the sector.
The challenges of the art world
The situation of the artists is complex, marked by the lack of professionalization, the absence of formal employment contracts and the irregularity in the contributions to the Social Security. Juan emphasizes that only recognizing this reality can understand the magnitude of the challenges facing the artists affected by the Dana.
