Almeria City Council withdraws a controversial campaign
Almeria City Council, governed by the Popular Party, has decided to withdraw an awareness campaign about sexual assaults on minors after receiving a lot of criticism. The slogan of the campaign was: “If she says no, it’s not sex, it’s aggression.” However, the ambiguity of the slogan has generated controversy, as some people have interpreted that with the consent of the minor it is not considered an assault. This interpretation has caused disagreement between politicians and citizens, with various political formations, such as Izquierda Unida, PSOE and Vox, and the opposition against the campaign.
Withdrawal of the poster and continuation of the campaign
The City Council has explained that the poster that has generated controversy has been included by mistake and will be removed immediately. However, this does not mean that the campaign stops, since the main objective is to raise awareness and sensitize the population of Almeria about sexual education and the prevention of sexual abuse towards minors. The campaign also includes other means of communication, such as social networks, press and distribution of promotional material.
Reactions and criticism
The City Council’s explanations have not been sufficient to avoid criticism. The indignation has crossed the borders of the municipality and even the Ministry of Equality has asked for the immediate withdrawal of the campaign, arguing that it is an attack on children and should not be financed with funds intended for the fight against gender violence.
Commitment of the City Council
Almeria City Council has expressed its disgust at the error in the campaign and has reiterated its commitment to the defense and protection of minors. They have apologized and assured that they will take the necessary measures to prevent situations like this from happening again in the future.
