Barcelona: New Horizon for Inclusive Sailing

A paradigm shift in sailing

The recent choice of Barcelona as the venue for the 37th Louis Vuitton America’s Cup represents more than a simple sporting competition; it is an opportunity to revitalize the city’s relationship with the sea. This presentation not only includes the renovation of areas such as the Old Port and the Olympic Port, but also seeks to transform the way in which sailing is perceived at a general level.

Initiatives for an accessible practice

The organization of this event, America’s Cup Event (ACE), is committed to making sailing an accessible activity for everyone. They have recently launched the ‘Yes We Sail’ project, which seeks to integrate visually impaired people into nautical sports by creating the first adapted skate in Catalonia. This innovation was born from the initiative of the sailor Dani Anglada, with the support of Grant Dalton, CEO of ACE.

The value of sport in inclusion

This proposal is not only limited to providing tools to people with visual impairments, but also aims to facilitate their recovery both physically and mentally. Aiming to bring sailing back to the Brisbane 2032 Paralympic Games, this initiative seeks to inspire and empower those who must overcome obstacles.

Institutional and community support

The presentation of the project was held at Club Patí Vela Barcelona, attended by prominent figures such as the pilot Isidre Esteve, the president of the UFEC, Gerard Esteva, and other members of the academic and sports world. This presence underlines the importance of joining efforts to advance the inclusion of the community.

Promotion of participation

In addition to ‘Yes We Sail’, ACE sponsors ‘Sailing for everyone’, an initiative of the Catalan Sailing Federation and other entities to facilitate access to sailing for those with disabilities. With support and training activities, the aim is to create an environment where everyone can enjoy sport.

A recognition of dedication

During the event, an award was presented to Grant Dalton in recognition of his contribution to the promotion of adapted sailing. This moment served to celebrate not only their efforts, but also the positive impact these initiatives will have on the community.

A look towards the future

With the edition of the America’s Cup that will be held in Barcelona in 2024, the aim is to redefine the history of sailing, paving the way to a future where inclusion and diversity are the center of attention, allowing anyone can enjoy the sea.
