A new meteorological chapter in Catalonia
In recent days, Barcelona and some areas of Catalonia have experienced a notable change in weather conditions, with scattered rains that have brought humidity to the atmosphere. Now, climate models indicate that a more intense episode of rain may occur, although its duration will be brief and its evolution is uncertain.
Thursday, a decisive day
The cold air that has recently arrived has combined with humidity, generating rain and even snow at altitudes above 700 meters. Wednesday afternoon could see this precipitation continue, especially in coastal and pre-coastal areas.
The role of the Gregal wind
On Thursday, the Gregal wind is expected to gain strength, facilitating the generation of more significant rainfall in the middle layers of the atmosphere. Several weather models suggest that the regions north of the Foix River could receive more rain, and there is the possibility of periods of heavy rain in other coastal areas.
According to forecasts, rain could begin to appear Thursday morning and intensify from noon to midnight.
Heavy rain warning
The Meteorological Service of Catalonia has issued a warning that 20 liters per square meter could be exceeded in half an hour in several regions, which extend between the Costa Brava and the Costa Daurada. This warning, with a grade 2 out of 6 classification, indicates that conditions could be locally severe.
Snow in the heights
Despite the possible rain, snow will continue to fall at higher altitudes, with temperatures experiencing a slight rise with the arrival of more humid air masses. This means that in areas where it has snowed recently, precipitation will begin to change to rain on Thursday, with the snow level rising above 1,200 meters.
Areas that may see more snow
The highest areas, such as Ripollès and Montseny, could experience significant snowfall, especially above 1,200 or 1,300 meters.
Improvements in weather over the weekend
After an intense Thursday, a notable improvement is expected on Friday, with clear skies and a decrease in precipitation. The weekend presents itself with sunnier weather, but also with the reappearance of fog inland and cold temperatures both day and night.
Although temperatures will be low, the sun’s rays during the day will provide a feeling of comfort in the warmest moments. In interior areas, where the fog is persistent, the cold will be intense and constant.
