Barcelona proposes to revitalize the School of the Sea with a new educational project

A step forward toward reconstruction

The Barcelona City Council has begun the procedures to bring to life the School of the Sea, an emblematic educational center that marked an age in the district of Barceloneta. Founded in 1921, this institution was an example of innovative pedagogy until its destruction during the Civil War in 1938.

A project that gains strength again

Although the current government, led by Jaume Collboni, had left the initiative, the ERC municipal group, again proposed its reconstruction. At a recent meeting of the Social Rights, Culture and Sports Commission, the idea gained the unanimous support of the present parties, except Vox.

Collaboration between parties to advance

The Councilor for Education, Lluís Rabell, has confirmed that the municipal government is actively working on the proposal. Sources close to the government have stated that the project is moving forward, with ERC and PSC collaborating to prepare a draft that could see the light in the budgets of 2025.

Looking for the best location

Rosa Suriñach, councilor of ERC, said that a specific heading has been achieved to advance the reconstruction. The goal is to define an appropriate location before the end of the current term. Several options have been identified between Barceloneta and Poblenou, with a preference for the original location of the neighborhood, despite legal and urban challenges.

A legacy to recover

Manel Martínez, vice president of the Barceloneta Neighborhood Association, emphasized the importance of the School of the Sea in the history of the neighborhood, regretting its continuous absence. Martinez believes that the new location should be a tribute to the institution that once flourished in the neighborhood.

An educational vision for the future

The debate on the future Sea School not only focuses on its architecture, but also on its pedagogical potential. More than 15 entities, including the Ministry of Education and the Catalan Society of Pedagogy, have requested that the new building be home to the Pedagogical Museum of Catalonia.

IMMINENT PROJECT PRESENTATION

According to Josep Serentill, president of the Catalan Society of Pedagogy, the days of the Museum of Education of Catalonia, scheduled for the end of October, will be the ideal scenario to present the project to the public. This event will not only expose the contents of the future museum, but also seek to attract both institutional and particular support.
