A new space for integration
Just over a month ago, Barcelona opened a new center designed to facilitate the reception and integration of people arriving in the city. Located at Carrer de Tarragona, 173, this facility joins the existing one at number 141, thus creating a comprehensive support network under the Immigrant, Emigrant and Refugee Service (SAIER).
Improvements in attention to newcomers
The recent expansion has allowed several care services that were previously scattered in different municipal locations to be brought together. With almost 1,000 new square meters, SAIER offers more efficient and specialized care, as commented by the Mayor of Barcelona, Jaume Collboni, highlighting the city’s commitment to being a welcoming space.
A message of humanity
During the inauguration, the Commissioner for Social Action, Sònia Fuertes, stressed the importance of transmitting a message of empathy and humanization in a European context where the rights of migrants are often compromised.
Functional distribution and specialized services
The new SAIER stands out for its distribution over five floors, with a total of 90 workplaces that facilitate personalized attention that respects the privacy of users. On the ground floor, a reception and immediate social care services are offered, including spaces for breastfeeding and translation.
Spaces designed for community
The renovation of the building, which cost 4.9 million euros, was designed by the Flexoarquitectura studio, with a focus on energy efficiency and accessibility. The spaces are spacious and open, designed to accommodate a large number of people simultaneously.
Attention to a diversity of profiles
SAIER has served more than 19,000 people in the last year, with a remarkable diversity of nationalities. Statistics indicate that asylum applications have increased, with a notable increase in people from Colombia, Venezuela, Peru and Morocco.
A constantly adapting service
In response to the migratory dynamics, SAIER has adapted its services to offer support to those arriving with complex life stories. Fuertes noted that it is a service designed for empathy, with a focus on creating community bonds.
A model to follow at the state level
SAIER is an example of good practices in caring for migrants and refugees in Spain, placing human rights at the center of public policies. Mayor Collboni stated that Barcelona has grown and enriched thanks to the contributions of the people who have arrived over the years.
Reflections on the future
In a world in constant change, cities must be prepared to face the challenges posed by migration. Barcelona, with its new SAIER, reaffirms its desire to welcome and build a more inclusive society.
