Barcelona’s innovative municipal proposal to promote sustainable mobility

An avant-garde vision to transform urban mobility

The local authorities of Barcelona are in negotiations with the Àrea Metropolitana de Barcelona (AMB) to implement a revolutionary shared electric bicycle project called AMBici. This service is already operational in six municipalities, including Sant Joan Despí and Sant Just Desvern, and plans are underway to expand it to 15 different locations.

Municipal support for the sustainable mobility initiative

In Sant Feliu, Mayor Oriol Bossa has expressed his enthusiastic support for this new shared electric bike service as a means of encouraging the use of bicycles in the city. However, mention is made of the economic challenge it entails, with an estimated cost of around 160,000 euros, which has caused a delay in its implementation in the city.

Budgets and financial challenges in the municipal framework

The Sant Feliu City Council has been forced to postpone the approval of the Budgets for 2023, in line with other municipalities in Catalonia, due to various economic pressures. The increases in the prices of energy, supplies and the sentence of the Constitutional Court have complicated the local financial situation.

Previous experiences and evolution of mobility services

In the past, several projects similar to the AMBici have been promoted, such as Bicing de Barcelona in 2009 or Bicibox in 2012. This evolution has marked a path towards innovative solutions in urban mobility, always seeking to improve accessibility and sustainability of travel.
