A new era for chemical research
The Catalan Institute for Chemical Research (ICIQ) and BASF have launched the fourth edition of the BASF-ICIQ Awards, an initiative aimed at highlighting and rewarding the most significant contributions in the field of chemistry in Spain and Portugal. This call seeks not only to recognize emerging talents, but also to foster an innovative ecosystem in the sector.
Award Categories: A diverse recognition
This year’s competition is structured into three distinctive awards, each with a financial award and specific criteria.
Award for the best doctoral thesis (€2,500)
Designed to recognize exceptional doctoral theses, this award seeks projects that provide innovative solutions to industrial problems or that expand knowledge in applied sciences. To participate, candidates must demonstrate that they have defended their thesis at a university in the region in the last three years, as well as having published an article in a prestigious scientific journal.
Prize for the best patent (€2,500)
This recognition will be granted to patents that reflect significant technological advances and have demonstrated an impact on knowledge transfer. Patents must have been filed within the last 10 years for public institutions and within the last 5 years for companies.
Award for the best entrepreneurship project (€4,000)
Dedicated to initiatives that seek to transform innovative ideas into sustainable companies, this award aims to highlight projects that make a significant difference in the chemical and technological landscape.
Future vision: Promoting scientific collaboration
Professor Emilio J. Palomares, Director of ICIQ, has underlined the impact of these awards as a catalyst for creativity and entrepreneurship in science. According to him, ‘The BASF-ICIQ Awards not only promote innovative research, but also serve as a driver for the development of ideas that can revolutionize the chemical industry and other relevant sectors.’
Carles Navarro, CEO of BASF Española, expressed his pride in the contribution to these awards, highlighting that collaboration with researchers and entrepreneurs is essential to address global challenges. ‘The awards are an example of how, working together, we can build a more sustainable future,’ he added.
Registration and evaluation of projects
Those interested in participating can submit their applications through the official ICIQ and BASF website until April 4, 2025. A jury of experts will evaluate each proposal based on its innovation, feasibility and potential impact. The winners will be announced at a ceremony to be held in June in Tarragona.
