BBVA is forced to return the money to a client victim of a cyber scam
Recently, BBVA has received a strong blow that was not expected. The Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) has demanded from the banking entity the return of the money that was improperly charged to one of its clients, who had been the victim of a cyber scam. After several unsuccessful attempts to complain to the bank, the customer turned to the OCU for support. Finally, BBVA had to return the almost 3,000 euros that had been charged to the client’s account.
The rise of cyber scams
BBVA, like other banking entities, is increasingly facing cases of cyber fraud. On this occasion, the scam appeared to be well designed as the victim had made an online purchase from a trusted online store. He received a text message that appeared to be from the courier company, asking him for a small amount to fix a shipping error. The customer provided her bank details and authorized the payment without suspecting anything untoward. A few days later, he discovered that several unauthorized purchases had been made with his card, for an amount close to 3,000 euros (https://www.softcatala.org/resum-de-textos-en-catala/).
The claim and mediation of the OCU
After discovering the scam, the customer quickly canceled her card and filed a complaint at the police station. He then collected all the necessary documentation and submitted a claim to BBVA to recover the defrauded money. At first, the banking entity refused to attend to his request, arguing that the payments had been authorized and that the error lay in not having adequately protected the means of payment. Finally, thanks to the intermediation of the OCU, BBVA had to return the money to the client (https://www.softcatala.org/resum-de-textos-en-catala/).
Precautions against cyber scams
This case highlights the importance of taking precautions against cyber scams. It is advisable to always verify the source of the messages received and not to provide personal or bank details without being sure of their authenticity. When in doubt, it is best to contact the company or entity in question directly to confirm the veracity of the communication.
