Analysis of canned tuna brands

Recently, an exhaustive study carried out by the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) has examined 32 brands of canned tuna, revealing that only two manage to achieve the highest rating. This analysis focuses not only on the quality of the product, but also on factors such as price and the suitability of its ingredients.

The brands highlighted in the rating

The brand that has achieved first place is Sal de Plata, available at Aldi. This light tuna in olive oil has stood out as the best option, achieving a notable score of 86 out of 100. It is especially relevant for its exceptional quality, an affordable price of only 2.69 euros, and an adequate salt content, which which makes it an attractive choice for those looking for a quality product.

The second brand that has received approval from the OCU is Hacendado, which can be found on the shelves of Mercadona. It is also a light tuna in olive oil and has achieved a remarkable rating of 85 points out of 100. This product has been classified as ‘Master Buy’ due to its excellent quality-price ratio. The OCU examined several criteria to evaluate the quality of tuna, and in the case of these two brands, no worrying levels of contaminants, such as heavy metals, were detected.

Classification of tuna according to the OCU

Within its analysis, the OCU also presented different categories of tuna. These include three denominations: Bonito del Norte, tuna and light tuna. Bonito del Norte, also known as Thunnus alalunga, is distinguished by being the most expensive and highest quality variety, characterised by its white meat. Tuna, on the other hand, includes several species of the Thunnus genus, with Katsuwonus pelamis being the most common variety and easily accessible in supermarkets. Finally, light tuna includes two varieties: Yellowfin or Rabil (Thunnus albacares) and Patudo (Thunnus obesus), the first being the one most commonly found in cans, while the second is appreciated for preparing sashimi.
