After Months of Conflict, Two Voices for Peace Emerge
On October 7, 2023, the Palestinian militant movement Hamas launched a surprise attack in southern Israel, igniting a confrontation that continues to this day. The effects of this war are devastating, with thousands of victims, mainly children, and hundreds of thousands of displaced people in Gaza. This crisis has not only triggered pain and loss, but also criticism of the Israeli government, as well as efforts to provide humanitarian aid.
Stories of Resistance and Hope
Within the framework of the Cities Defending Human Rights, the Montserrat Roig Library was the setting for an inspiring conference entitled “Building Peace in Israel and Palestine”. Two prominent voices in this peace effort are those of Mai Shanin and Iris Gur, two activists who are fighting to break with established narratives and build a fairer future.
The Voice of Mai Shanin: Challenge to Violence
Mai Shanin, the daughter of Palestinian fighters, has experienced war since her youth. Now, as a therapist and member of Combatents for Peace, she advocates for peaceful solutions to conflict. Her personal experience, marked by mixed marriages and restrictions on movement, illustrates the complexities of daily life under occupation.
Despite the obstacles, Shanin emphasizes the importance of overcoming the divide and finding common ground. His physical absence from the conference, caused by travel restrictions imposed by the Spanish government, underscores the global nature of the oppression.
The Voice of Iris Gur: From Zionist Adhesion to Dissidence
Iris Gur, Israeli educator, recounts her transformation from Zionist membership to criticism of systems of oppression. His personal experience, including his daughter’s arrest for refusing military service, reveals the cracks in the dominant narrative in Israel.
Gur denounces apartheid and the dehumanization that perpetuates war and urges international intervention for peace. His message resonated with the public, underscoring the urgent need for action.
A Call to Global Action
Both Shanin and Gur agree on the importance of the international community in resolving the conflict. They urge Europe and the United States to take an active role in mediating and promoting peace in the region.
These narratives of resistance and hope serve as a call to action. Those attending the conference left with a new impetus to contribute to peace in Israel and Palestine, aware of the challenges but also of the possible progress.
A Future of Peace and Collaboration
The road to peace in Israel and Palestine is not easy, but with the tenacity and support of the global community, it is possible. Through dialogue, understanding and solidarity, a future can be built where all the inhabitants of the region can live free from fear and violence.
For a more just and peaceful world, it is time to make the voices of peace heard and work together towards a better future for all.
