A new project for a new era
Cardona City Council has set itself an ambitious goal: in the coming years, it wants to establish a new residential center for the elderly, designed to respond to the current needs of the population. With a vision that extends to 2030, the municipal body is looking for solutions that allow the current care capacity to be significantly increased.
A new location and a new model
Instead of remodeling the current residence, located in the upper part of the old town, the ERC management team believes that the best option is to build a completely new building. The first studies have concluded that the expansion of the existing facilities would not be viable. So, two potential locations are already being analyzed: Miracle Park and Arquers Colony.
The need for a new space
Ferran Estruch, the mayor of Cardona, emphasizes that the current residence, managed by a non-profit foundation, has become outdated. With 35% of the local population over the age of 65, the demand for services has grown significantly. Currently, the Sant Jaume residence offers only 67 places, but the aim is to increase this number to a minimum of 75, including 25 places for the day centre.
Studies and political consensus
The City Council, with the support of the Consorci de Salut i Social de Catalunya, is carrying out a detailed study on the two proposed locations. Estruch emphasizes the importance of reaching a political agreement that involves all the forces involved, as well as the local community, to ensure that the new residence is a consensual and well-founded project.
Collaboration with organizations in the sector
To ensure efficient management of the new equipment, the City Council has initiated contacts with the Sant Andreu Salut Foundation. Estruch argues that to be able to offer a care service for the elderly in accordance with the demands of the 21st century, it is essential to have a robust foundation that provides the necessary experience and resources.
A future with more care services
In addition to the new residence, Cardona is working to strengthen home care services, which currently reach more than 100 people. Estruch insists on the need to adapt services to the real needs of grandparents, guaranteeing their autonomy and well-being.
A vision towards 2030
With the commitment to define a solid project during this mandate, Cardona City Council aspires to make the new residence for the elderly a reality before the year 2030. The objective is clear: to build a space that meets the needs of the present and future, guaranteeing a better quality of life for its larger population.
