A quality Catalan whiskey

In Catalonia, we are not Scots, but we also know how to make good whiskey. Although in smaller quantities, we have some units that can be counted on the fingers of one’s hands. Isaac and Pilar, two entrepreneurs who left their jobs as an economist and a biologist respectively, decided a few years ago to embark on the adventure of manufacturing gins and liqueurs in their own workshop. Recently, they have added a new reference to their catalog: Catalonia Single Malt whiskey. This whiskey, made with barley malt, is the first of its kind in Catalonia and has been created with the entire process located in the municipality of Llançà, in Alt Empordà, north of the Costa Brava. Currently, the whiskey is in the process of resting and is expected to go on the market throughout 2024.

The first 100% Catalan whiskey

Quevall Licors, the company behind this project, has worked hard to make their dream come true. Catalonia Single Malt whiskey will be the first whiskey completely made in Catalonia. Since 2021, the founders of Quevall Licors have been working on the distillation of this malted barley-based whiskey. As they explain, at least three years of rest in the barrel are required for the whiskey to reach its optimal quality. In addition to whiskey, Quevall Licors also produces other liquors, such as gins, ratafias and liqueurs without chemical additives, using artisanal methods. Their workshop is located in an 11th century house in Girona, where they carefully age their products before bottling them. With the launch of Catalonia Single Malt whiskey in 2024, Quevall Licors is marking a milestone in the history of whiskey in Catalonia and fusing Catalan tradition with avant-garde distillation techniques.

Catalonia Single Malt goes beyond being just a whiskey; It is a declaration of intent. This distillate represents the perfect union between Catalan tradition and the most avant-garde techniques in distillation. The stills used by Quevall Licors, designed specifically for whiskey distillation, are noticeably smaller than those traditional in Scotland or Ireland. This gives Catalonia Single Malt a more concentrated and distinctive flavor. This first Catalan whiskey is a milestone in the history of whiskey in Catalonia and represents a perfect symbiosis between tradition and innovation in distillation.
