Catalonia: A Complex and Challenging Political Scenario

An Unusual Political Panorama

Catalonia is at an unprecedented political crossroads, marked by two phenomena that challenge its democratic tradition. On the one hand, the Socialist Party holds significant power with electoral support that does not match the figures of a true popular mandate. On the other hand, the lack of significant representation from the center and the political right opens up a new debate on political diversity in the region.

The Socialist Dominions and the Unexpected Alliances

With a notable presence in key institutions, such as Barcelona City Council and the Generalitat, the Socialist Party has managed to remain at the top despite its electoral minority. For example, in the City Council, it only has 10 out of 41 councillors, while in the Generalitat, it has 42 out of 165 deputies. This discrepancy between popular support and institutional representation is unusual on the European stage.

Strategic Alliances

Its hegemony has been built through coalitions with parties such as the PP and the Republican Left, a fact that has surprised many observers due to their ideological divergences. For example, the PP’s support for facilitating the mayoralty for Jaume Collboni illustrates a political dynamic that defies traditional expectations.

Catalan Culture in Danger

Another worrying aspect is the Socialist Party’s perception of Catalan culture. Decisions such as replacing the traditional nativity scene with a contemporary version or neglecting events such as the Mare de Déu de la Mercè reflect a lack of connection with the cultural and popular identity of the territory.

The Catalan Language and Its Future

The situation of the Catalan language is alarming, with a significant decline in its use. Only a third of the population of Barcelona considers it their preferred language in daily interactions. In addition, the growing percentage of foreign-born residents and demographic trends, such as the increase in abortions, highlight a crisis that goes beyond the simple linguistic aspect.

The Opinions of the Citizens

According to recent data from the Center for Opinion Studies, 62% of Catalans believe that the government has lost control over immigration, and 58% perceive an excess of immigrants. However, the reactions of political parties, including the Socialist Party and the Commons, do not seem to reflect these concerns.

The Perception of Language and Culture

The survey also reveals that 62% of the population consider that the Catalan language and culture are in danger. However, inaction by the parties in power indicates a lack of political will to address this fundamental issue.

The Center-Right Political Eight

The lack of a significant center or right-wing political force is another strange phenomenon in Catalonia. Parties like Junts fail to capture the essence of what CDC was, and seem trapped in a political dynamic that limits their options for collaboration with other formations.

In short, Catalonia is facing a crucial moment in its political and social evolution. The interplay between unexpected alliances, the cultural crisis and the lack of representation of the center-right presents a picture that will require deep analysis and open debate about its future.
