A Historical Moment for Catalonia
Catalonia is in a stage of significant transformation, with a leadership that reflects the ideas of a progressive past. The Generalitat, under the direction of a politician with Tarradellist roots, symbolizes a new era. After 34 years of dedication to the cause, it is a moment of celebration for all those who have contributed to this social, political and environmental evolution.
Remembering the Past: A Book That Marked an Era
Recently, a former professional colleague highlighted the importance of a book I co-wrote in 1978, ‘El combat ecologista per Catalunya’. In this work, we pointed out the environmental challenges we faced, such as pollution and land degradation, and proposed solutions to counteract the effects of the aggressive capitalism of the time. Our message, then considered radical, has taken on new relevance today.
A Sustainable Future: Successes and Challenges
Looking at the current landscape, with wind turbines and solar panels integrated into everyday life, I feel optimistic. Ideas that seemed utopian decades ago are now part of mainstream discourse. Environmentalist and feminist ideas have found a place in the public debate, although there is still a long way to go. The Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations guide us towards a new, more just and equitable civilization.
The Government’s Commitment
I welcome the fact that the Government of Salvador Illa has launched a package of measures to accelerate the transition to renewable energies. The goal of generating 50% of electricity from clean sources by 2030 is an important step, but we need more determined action.
The Need for a Strong Environmental Voice
Despite the progress, the lack of a consolidated environmentalist party in Catalonia is worrying. Unlike other European countries, here we have failed to build a robust political force that can defend environmental interests effectively in Parliament.
Urgent Environmental Challenges
Catalonia faces serious problems such as drought, water pollution and inadequate waste management. It is essential that these issues are treated with the same seriousness as the expansion of El Prat airport. We cannot allow our natural heritage to be compromised by a lack of vision.
A Collective Commitment
Catalonia, with its rich diversity and natural resources, has a duty to preserve its environment. As we head towards the Future Summit in New York, it’s time to reflect on our role in the fight against climate change. As a society, we must work together to ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.
