Catalonia faces a complicated weekend for strong and snowy winds

A weekend marked by storms

Catalonia has experienced a difficult weekend, with a significant increase in the weather incidents that have affected various regions. Until the first hours of Sunday, the 112 emergency service has registered more than 850 calls, with the regions of Alt Empordà and Baix Empordà the most impacted, with 199 and 122 alerts respectively.

Impact on transport services

The railway circulation has suffered significant alterations, with impacts on R3, R4 and R11 commuter lines. Especially, the R3 line had to establish an alternative road service due to an incident in a convoy traveling from Puigcerdà to Hospitalet. Yesterday, it was reported that there was no traffic trains between Ripoll and Puigcerdà, while other lines were also affected by fallen trees.

Firefighters interventions

The Generalitat firefighters have acted in about 600 incidents related to adverse conditions, with most interventions in the Girona Emergency Region. Falls of trees on roads, vehicles and homes have been the most common situations, without any injuries.

Problems with the electricity supply

The Alt Empordà has experienced light cuts that have affected about 1,435 subscribers to municipalities such as Agullana and Darnius. Endesa has quickly worked to restore service, although there are still some areas with interruptions. The situation has been gradually normalized over the weekend.

Complicated road conditions

The snowfall has caused the BV-4024 road to access the Coll de Pal and forced the use of chains to other routes such as the C-28 and the N-141. Several incidents related to fallen trees have affected other roads, creating a difficult scenario for drivers.

Alerts by wind and wave

Civil Protection keeps the alerts for strong wind and waves on the Costa Brava, with gusts that can exceed 100 km/h. The waves also have a considerable danger, with heights that can reach up to four meters. Authorities recommend caution and avoid outdoor activities in risky areas.

Future forecasts

The weather will continue to be monitored, and the conditions are expected to continue to affect the region over the coming days. Authorities encourage the population to be attentive to updates and follow security recommendations.
