Catalonia leads the statistics
According to data from the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ), Catalonia has led the state statistics of evictions in 2023. With a total of 7,148 evictions, Catalonia represents 26.8% of the State’s total. Despite this, this figure represents a decrease of 16.6% compared to the previous year.
Types of evictions
Of the total evictions in Catalonia, 5,158 were due to non-payment of rent, a decrease of 16% compared to 2022. Regarding mortgage foreclosures, 1,264 evictions occurred, a decrease of 19%. 726 evictions of various types were also registered.
State level data
Statewide, there were a total of 26,659 evictions in 2023, a decrease of 30.3%. Of the total, 74.1% (19,676) were due to rent arrears, while 19.7% (5,260) were due to foreclosures. The remaining 1,723 evictions were for other reasons.
Eviction rate in Catalonia
The rate of evictions due to non-payment in Catalonia was 65.3 per 100,000 inhabitants, the second highest in the country. The Canary Islands (63.2) and the Balearic Islands (61.9) occupied the following places in this statistic. In terms of evictions due to mortgage foreclosures, Catalonia ranked third with a rate of 16 per 100,000 inhabitants, behind Murcia (20.3) and the Valencian Community (20.1).
Other relevant data
In addition to evictions, Catalonia also leads the statistics in other areas. With a total of 12,075 competitions for legal entities, Catalonia is in first place, followed by Andalusia (6,310) and the Valencian Country (5,478). It is also the territory with the most business contests before the commercial courts, with 26.3% of the total (1,435). At the state level, a total of 42,443 contests were presented to judicial bodies, 52.9% more than in 2022. Regarding dismissal claims, a total of 140,384 were registered in the whole State, with Catalonia leading the list with 27,547 demands.
