A birthday full of meaning
The El Far association, located in La Garriga, has marked an important millennium in its history by dedicating itself to raising awareness about mental health. They recently organized a commemorative lunch to celebrate 15 years of efforts and successes in caring for people affected by mental disorders.
Reflecting on 15 years of work
Founded in 2009, El Far has made a balance sheet that reflects a positive trajectory, although it recognizes that the battle against the challenges of mental health is continuous. Israel Molinero, one of the members of the association, commented: “These years have been very significant. We have fulfilled some of our objectives, such as the creation of a social club and the response to the housing problem. However, the work in mental health is never-ending.”
A new project for autonomy
In the summer of 2023, El Far inaugurated its first home for people with mental health problems. Currently, four users live in this home, which has the support of professionals from the Viver de Bell-lloc Foundation. This initiative is part of the Home Autonomy Support Program (PSALL), managed by the Department of Social Rights of the Generalitat. The home, located in a former teacher’s house in the school area, represents an important step towards autonomy for its residents.
Community care and support
El Far not only manages the housing, but also offers care to around fifty people, including families and individuals, at its social club in La Garriga. Molinero highlights the importance of this support network, which allows participants to share experiences and receive mutual help.
New challenges on the horizon
Despite the successes achieved, Molinero recognizes that there are still many challenges to be faced. The consolidation of housing is a priority, as is the need for additional resources to adequately manage services. In addition, the association works to defend the rights of people with mental health problems and improve the quality of care in specialized centers. One of its objectives also includes fighting the stigma associated with these problems through awareness-raising activities.
