Celebrating 80 years of tradition: Guifré and Guinedell again shine

A memorable commemoration in Ripoll

This 2025 marks a significant milestone for the giant gang of Ripoll, as the emblematic Guifré and Guinedell celebrate their 80th anniversary. The party began with a very emotional event in the Abat Sant Just room, where the mayor and former members of the gang met to remember the history and impact of these giants on the community.

The origins of Guifré and Guinedell

The idea of building the giants was born in a session of the plenary session in 1945, when Eusebi Pujol, the mayor of the time, proposed the creation of these figures that represent the identity of Catalonia and Ripoll. That same summer, Guifré el Pilós and his wife Guinedell were first presented, and since then they have been a fundamental part of local celebrations.

Reflections of former members of the gang

During the event, Mayor Sílvia Orriols expressed her thanks to the gang, highlighting the effort and dedication they have maintained over the years. Carlos Carrasco, an ancient giant who brought Guinedell for more than three decades, shared unforgettable memories, such as his experience at the Olympic Stadium during the Paralympic Games. Carrasco recalled how to climb a mountain with a giant on his back was a moment that he deeply marked him.

The future of giants: restoration and renewal

Clara Anglada, a restaurateur in charge of the replicas, explained that her goal is to return the giants to her original splendor instead of introducing changes. The restoration work will begin immediately, with the intention of recovering the original painting and the details of the figures, so that they can look like the first day when they are presented on May 11, during the feast of Sant Eudald.

A year full of events and celebrations

The anniversary year promises to be full of activities. On May 18, Guifré and Guinedell will take part in the Wool Festival and the Wedding in Pagès. The highlight will come at the end of May with a great celebration that will include parades and a commemorative exhibition of the 80 years of life of these giants, as well as the launch of a new sardana in his honor.

A legacy that lasts

Lluís Pérez, president of the gang, emphasized the importance of the giants as symbols of the cultural identity of the town. ‘The giants are a manifestation of our history and traditions. Its presence indicates that there is a celebration underway, ” he said. To close the day, Guifré and Guinedell went out to dance the community, remembering all the power of the tradition and the union they represent.
