The importance of 8m: a moment of reflection
Every year, March 8 reminds us of the struggle for gender equality and the rights of women. However, the real desire is that this commemoration becomes obsolete, indicating that we have achieved a world where equality is a reality, and not just an aspiration.
A future without discrimination: the current struggle
Women deserve to live in an environment of freedom and security, where their rights are recognized and respected. Equality is not a luxury, but an immediate need that we must achieve together. It is essential that society understands that equality is a fundamental human right.
Specific actions: Equality policies in Tortosa
From the City of Tortosa, measures are being implemented to promote equality. It is vital that future generations of women, including daughters, can travel through the streets with confidence and security. In order to achieve this, we need public spaces to reflect the contribution of women, with the names of women inspiring.
Recognize forgotten women
Many times, women’s contributions have been invisible. In my childhood, I was wondering why women’s names were not more present in the streets of my city. Now I understand that they have been present, but society has not been able to give them the recognition they deserve.
The lilac month: a space of visibility
In this context, we have begun the ‘Lilate’ month, a period dedicated to the celebration of women through various activities such as exhibitions, conferences and reading clubs. This initiative seeks to get everyone involved in the cause of equality, which affects all areas of society.
8M Awards: Recognize the women of Tortosa
For the first time, the 8M Awards have been established, with the aim of highlighting the contributions of relevant women in our city. We have received more than eighty nominations, a signal of the impact that women have on various fields.
Tribute to Montse Esteve Palà
Among the winners, a special mention of Montse Esteve Palà, who made a significant contribution to the cultural and social world of Tortosa. His loss, five years ago, was a great blow to the community, but his legacy endures.
An act of celebration
The awards ceremony will be held on Saturday in the Teaching Classroom of the Museum of Tortosa. The winners include prominent figures of culture, sport and science, as well as a special recognition of the caregivers, a often forgotten group.
Remembering references: Josefa Subirats Favà
In our struggle to make women visible, we must not forget figures such as Josefa Subirats Favà, known as Pepeta la country. Its influence has been significant in Tortosa, and we are now working to dignify its memory with a monolith and a commemorative plaque.
Toward an egalitarian future
8M Awards are not only a recognition, but also a way of giving voice to women who have often been silenced. We hope that this initiative is the first of a long series, to honor our ancestors who have fought for equality.
For a Tortosa where equality is a palpable reality, we continue to work and claim.
