Celebrating the silenced voices: a mural for women in the prison

A new mural for new opportunities

Yesterday, the walls of the Ponent Penitentiary Center witnessed a significant action: the inauguration of a mural that seeks to give prominence and visibility to the women of internal women. This initiative is part of the project ‘Transfering the goal’, which highlights the experiences and creativity of these women through their own photographs.

Act of recognition and reflection

The inauguration was attended by key figures such as Carme Valls, Deputy Mayor and head of feminist policies, as well as other authorities and representatives of the Setba Foundation. Valls emphasized the importance of projects offered by ‘a new look’ and ‘open to the future’ for these women, regardless of their past.

THE TRANSFORMING POWER OF L’ART

The Councilor for Culture, Pilar Bosch, spoke about how culture can act as an agent of change and healing. ‘Culture saves us,’ he said, emphasizing the positive impact that the arts may have on the lives of individuals seeking to reintegrate to society.

Reflecting on the triple condemnation

Anna Miranda, director of the territorial justice services, recalled that internal women are often affected by a ‘triple condemnation’: criminal, social and personal. This reality resonates with the need to create spaces where they can express themselves and be heard.

An artistic journey

The project ‘Transfering the goal’ has been designed to offer the interns the opportunity to participate in photographic workshops, with the artistic direction of Marta Fàbregas and, this year, by the photographer Lleida Iolanda Sebé. The resulting photographs have been exhibited in a traveling sample that will be available until January 5 in the Paeria exhibition hall, under the slogan ‘Invisible Women’.

Collaborations for a better future

This initiative is the result of the collaboration between the Department of Justice, Rights and Memory of the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Setba Foundation, with the support of the Lleida City Council and other entities. An example of how the union of efforts can lead to significant changes in the lives of the most vulnerable people.

With this action, a step forward is taken to recognize and empower the voices that have often been ignored, and the commitment to inclusion and gender equality is reaffirmed.
