The Legacy of Jaume Carner i Romeu
Born in El Vendrell in 1876 and moved to Barcelona in 1934, Jaume Carner was a lawyer and politician committed to Catalanism. He was one of the founding members of the Catalan National Centre and played a crucial role within the Regionalist League, representing the most progressive and republican wing of the movement. Carner was also one of the architects of the candidacy of the ‘four presidents’ in the 1901 elections.
Contributions to Catalan Politics
During his career, Carner was a councilor of the Barcelona City Council and co-founded the federalist and Catalanist newspaper El Poble Català. He was one of the promoters of the Catalan Solidarity, which achieved a significant victory in the 1907 elections. In 1910, he co-founded the Unió Federal Nacionalista Republicana, although the subsequent internal crisis led him to withdraw from politics for a time.
Return to the Political Scene
Despite not being involved in the creation of the Republican Left of Catalonia, in 1931, after the proclamation of the Republic, Carner returned to politics as president of the Provisional Provincial Council of Catalonia. In this position, he led the team responsible for drafting the Statute of Núria and, later, was appointed Minister of Finance by Manuel Azaña, where he promoted tax reforms that marked a before and after in the country’s tax history.
Reflections on the Future
The commemoration of Jaume Carner is not only a tribute to his life and work, but also an opportunity for today’s society to reflect on the values of Catalanism and the importance of committed politics. This event is an invitation to everyone to remember and learn from the past to build a better future for Catalonia.
