A New Voice to Claim Rights
A group of children of egg and sperm donors have joined forces to create a new association seeking legislative changes to guarantee them access to their origins. The Association of Daughters and Sons of Donors (AFID) has made its official presentation in Barcelona, being the first of its kind in Spain.
Legal Challenges and Infringed Rights
The main objective of this association is to promote changes in the assisted reproduction law, which currently guarantees the anonymity of donors. Maria Sellés, spokeswoman for the organization, has emphasized that the lack of information about donors endangers several children’s rights, including the right to health and mental well-being. This situation has also generated a feeling of invisibility that the association seeks to break.
Ignorance of Family Background
One of the main fears of this group is the lack of information about their family history and the possible implications for their health. This has caused concern that, when faced with a disease or medical test, they do not have the necessary answers. In addition, the adequacy of the health checks carried out on donors is questioned, as many of them may have developed health problems after donation.
Claim for Transparency and Access to Information
The association also fights for transparency in information, especially in birth registration, defending that all individuals have the right to know their origins. In addition, they seek to influence the political sphere to promote legislative changes that have already been implemented in other European countries, where the anonymity of donors is not complete.
Awareness and Support
In addition to its political actions, AFID also contemplates the possibility of providing support services to people and families affected by this situation, seeking to generate an open and critical debate on this issue.
