A walk through the sites of ‘Poodle’

In commemoration of the 45th anniversary of the release of ‘Poodle’, a cult classic film directed by Bigas Luna, we delve into some of the locations captured by the director’s stylized eye.

The story of ‘Poodle’ is inspired by a discussed episode in the life of Salvador Dalí and Gala. The plot revolves around Bernardo and Eloisa, two siblings who share a dilapidated house in the upper area of Barcelona, together with the poodle of the title, named Dany. This peculiar family forms an oppressive ecosystem, where the dog acts as a catalyst for forbidden desires.

In a memorable sequence, Dany takes advantage of a visit from the vet Alberto to escape from the film’s second house and run through the streets of Barcelona. Finally, the dog is rescued by a couple of ladies.

Other movie locations in Barcelona

Bigas Luna explored the city of Barcelona in other film titles. In ‘Tatuatge’, his first feature film, the plot takes place in Vallvidrera. In ‘Bilbao’, the protagonist walks down Carrer d’Escudellers and visits Panam’s on the Rambla. In ‘Lola’, the cafe restaurant Cosmos, located on the Rambla, plays an important role.

In short, Bigas Luna used the locations of Barcelona to capture the essence of his stories. From the run-down houses in the upper zone to the emblematic streets such as Escudellers and the Rambla, the city was a perfect setting for his films.
