Commemorates the Heritage of Saint John Lateran: A Journey through 1,700 Years

A Celebration That Marks History

On November 9, the Basilica of Sant Joan del Laterà is preparing to close its commemorative festivities of its 1,700th anniversary with a solemn event. At 17.30, Msgr. Baldo Reina, the Pope’s vicar for the diocese of Rome, will lead a pontifical office that promises to be memorable.

Music that Resonates in the Cathedral

The Choir of the Diocese of Rome, under the direction of Msgr. Marco Frisina, will bring a special tone to the celebration with original songs designed for the occasion. Frisina comments on her work: “I have created a mass for the festivity of the dedication, and in addition, a hymn that symbolizes the essence of the Church as a building of living stones.”

The Future of Catechesis

The day before, on November 8, the basilica will host the first session of the “Listening to the Masters” itinerary, with the participation of prominent figures such as Msgr. Andrea Lonardo and Fabio Rosini. This initiative, as Francesco d’Alfonso, moderator of the event, points out, is an opportunity to explore 1,700 years of history in a dynamic format.

Historical Moments in the Basilica

D’Alfonso emphasizes that the conversation will cover important events, from Constantine to Saint Francis and Borromini, as well as the funeral of Aldo Moro, an event that marked the 20th century in Rome.

Art and Reflection in Dialogue

The day will be marked by artistic interaction, with performances by organist Leonardo Coen and the Musicanova choir, as well as the participation of actor Davide Fasano, creating a celebratory atmosphere that unites music with history.

A Contest that Inspires New Generations

The anniversary celebration will coincide with the conclusion of a competition aimed at students of all ages, called “The Lateran Basilica between faith and history”, which seeks to encourage creativity through new technologies.

The Legacy of the Basilica

Rosario Chiarazzo, director of the Office for Scholastic Pastoral Care, underlines the importance of the basilica as the epicenter of events that have left a deep mark on the civil and religious life of Rome for centuries.

Reflections on the Past and the Future

With this commemoration, Saint John Lateran not only celebrates its glorious past, but also opens a new chapter in its history, inviting future generations to continue exploring and sharing its legacy.
