Control of scooters and bicycles: One month of sanctions in Tortosa

A tricky start for scooter and bicycle drivers

During the month of July, the Local Police of Tortosa applied a total of 91 sanctions affecting users of bicycles and scooters. This situation reveals a prevalence of non-compliance that has become evident in several areas of the city.

Restricted areas and specific penalties

More than 50% of the fines have been imposed for not complying with traffic rules in the pedestrian area of the shopping centre. It is important to note that an information campaign has recently been carried out emphasizing the need to get out of the vehicle during business hours, which are set from Monday to Saturday between 9.30am and 1.00pm and from 4.30pm to 8:30 p.m.

Common violations detected

In addition to penalties for ignoring timetables, fines have also been recorded for driving on the pavement, using headphones, and traveling with two people on the same scooter. The local ordinance provides for penalties that can reach up to 100 euros for this type of infraction.

Civility campaigns: Preserving coexistence

The City Council has implemented a civility campaign that includes civic agents who distributed informative materials during June, reminding that violations could lead to significant fines. This initiative seeks to ensure peaceful coexistence in public space, thus responding to the concerns expressed by residents and traders about the circulation of light vehicles.

Complementary citizenship initiatives

In the context of this campaign, the City Council has also clarified laws on the collection of dog waste and the proper use of garbage containers, thus promoting a more pleasant environment for all.

Novelties in the management of sanctions

Looking ahead, Tortosa City Council is developing an internal protocol to allow offenders to perform community service instead of paying fines. This is part of the ordinance that allows the application of alternative measures to financial penalties for minor violations.

Collaboration with local entities

The community work will be developed in collaboration with the Drug Addiction Care and Follow-up Center, involving offenders in activities that encourage re-education and the development of civic values.
