During the first half of 2024, approximately 20% of flights in Spain arrived late, according to data provided by Eurocontrol, the European Organization for the Safety of Air Navigation. This situation has generated several causes, including problems attributable to the airlines such as strikes or technical incidents, as well as adverse weather conditions and geopolitical conflicts.
Classification of the punctuality of flights in Spain
Spain occupies the eighth position in terms of flight punctuality, with a punctuality index of 79.2% during the first six months of 2024. This ranking places Spain behind countries such as Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Estonia, Austria, Lithuania and Poland.
The most punctual airports in Spain
According to Eurocontrol, Bilbao airport is the most punctual airport in Europe during 2024, with a punctuality rate of 85.3%. Other Spanish airports such as Seville, Madrid, Valencia, Ibiza, Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, Alicante, Lanzarote, Tenerife North, Malaga, Tenerife South and Gran Canaria are also in the punctuality ranking.
Passenger rights in the event of delays
In the event of flight delays, passengers are entitled to compensation if the delay is three or more hours after the airline’s originally scheduled arrival time. However, this right does not apply in cases of extraordinary causes such as political instability, adverse weather conditions, security risks or strikes affecting airline operations.
