A commitment to public health
The Anoia Health Consortium, through its Technical Screening Office, has initiated a new phase of the Early Detection Program for Colorectal Cancer in Igualada. This initiative, which takes place every two years, is designed for men and women between 50 and 69 years old, an age group particularly susceptible to this disease.
How is screening performed?
The procedure consists of obtaining a stool sample, which will undergo an immunological test to identify the presence of occult blood. This analysis is crucial, as it allows the detection of small lesions, such as adenomas, which could evolve into colorectal cancer if not treated in time.
Statistics and previous results
In the previous edition of the program, 10,712 citizens were invited to participate, and 155 cases of suspicious polyps and 6 cases of cancer were detected. The participation rate was 53%, with 43% of participants joining the initiative for the first time.
Step by step: how to participate
Those who fall into the specified age group will receive an invitation by mail. To participate, they will need to go to a participating pharmacy, where they will be provided with a test kit that includes a swab and a sample tube. The process is very simple and can be done comfortably at home.
The monitoring process
After collecting the sample, it should be taken to the pharmacy as soon as possible, although it can be stored in the refrigerator temporarily. The results will be communicated by letter within a period of weeks. If signs of blood are identified, a visit to the nurse will be recommended to determine if a colonoscopy, an examination that allows the interior of the colon and rectum to be visualized, is necessary.
Importance of early detection
Early detection is essential to prevent the development of cancer. Colonoscopy, which is performed under sedation, is a safe procedure with minimal risks of complications, and is vital for identifying and removing adenomas before they become cancerous.
Looking to the future
With this program, Igualada reaffirms its commitment to the health of its citizens. Early detection not only saves lives, but also improves the quality of life of those affected. Participating in this type of initiative is an important step towards a healthier and more informed community.
