A summer opportunity: learning lindy hop
Summer gives us unique moments that, many times, the daily hustle and bustle prevents us from enjoying. On this occasion, we have decided to treat ourselves to learning a very special style of swing: the lindy hop. This dance, which is usually performed as a couple, offers countless possibilities, from intense movements to calmer steps, adapting to any level of experience and without requiring exceptional physical condition or a specific age. It is an activity that combines exercise, fun and a wonderful feeling of freedom and complicity with your dance partner.
Dance as escape and liberation
Dancing not only provides entertainment; It also allows you to clear your mind, removing everyday worries and distractions. Getting involved in lindy hop means focusing on rhythm and connection with your partner, which turns out to be excellent therapy for stress. No matter how you look at it, dance is good for us.
Origin and evolution of the swing
Swing is a dance style originating in jazz music from the 1920s. With various variants over time, lindy hop stands out as one of the most representative. This dance emerged in Harlem, New York, in the 1930s, specifically among the dancers of the emblematic Savoy Ballroom. They incorporated elements of the Charleston and other movements such as the Texas Tommy, the Black Bottom and the Cakewalk, thus originating the ‘swing out’, one of the most characteristic steps of lindy hop.
A name with history
The term ‘lindy hop’ is said to have been coined in 1927 in a New York dance hall, during a competition commemorating Charles Lindbergh’s transatlantic flight. The name would allude to a ‘jump’ from one coast to another. The popularity of the dance grew rapidly, and dance halls were filled with couples enjoying live music from jazz bands, incorporating new steps, playful gestures and lots of fun. In 1943, the lindy hop came to be considered the ‘national dance’ of the United States.
The charm of lindy hop today
Over the years, lindy hop has maintained its popularity and is appreciated by many. Experts point out that the key to enjoying it lies in following the rhythm, connecting with your partner, wearing comfortable shoes and clothing and, above all, smiling. Although I am not an expert, after a few classes I can say that I completely agree.
Relax and have fun
Lindy hop venues are booming, as are festivals dedicated to the dance. There are even those who gather in parks to dance freely. Personally, I prefer to do it with live jazz music. It is a great way to promote culture, fun and exercise. Looking at the traditional dress, you easily imagine a New York office worker and a secretary enjoying a night of dancing after a day of work, eager to have a good time and relax.
Lindy hop is also a great way to socialize, as you don’t need to go with a partner. It’s a friendly space where many can enjoy the activity without complications. In this dance, both the leader and the follower perform the same steps, which is healthy in these times that promote equality. Both men and women can exchange roles without it being awkward.
An invitation to the dance
Cheer up to dance. I assure you that you will enjoy the moment and laugh. And don’t worry if it doesn’t turn out perfect at first; The great thing about lindy hop is that over time you can only get better and enjoy it more and more.
Today I wanted to share a proposal for health and joy: dancing outdoors with a jazz band, enjoying how much we can achieve with so little. Because in the end, that’s exactly what it’s about.
