An episode of rediscovery has arrived in the town of Llimiana with the reopening of the mythical Cova dels Muricecs, a real natural gem that was hidden for countless times.
This reopening not only opens the doors to the public, but also offers a unique opportunity to carry out periodic monitoring of a critical species, the Muricecs, which were threatened with extinction. The cave, with its wealth of cavities and the diversity of its fauna, emerges as a symbol of exceptional biodiversity.
A Pact for Exploration and Conservation
The Generalitat, in collaboration with Llimiana City Council, Renatura Pirineu and the BiBio Research Group, has reached an agreement that allows the controlled reopening of this natural sanctuary. This pact aims not only to protect the Muricecs, but also to facilitate guided tours to raise public awareness of their ecological importance.
Guarding the Colony of Wings
Jordi Castilló, from Renatura Pirineu, leads the periodic expeditions to the cave, equipped with a camera and a flashlight, meticulously counting the animal population. In the last survey, he recorded an amazing diversity of four species, including the rare Myotis capaccinii.
This monitoring, part of a wider bat monitoring program in Catalonia, provides crucial data for the conservation of endangered species.
Science and Awareness
In addition to scientific research, guided tours are promoted to educate the public about the importance of conserving the Muricecs. Access to the cave is restricted through the company Zenith Aventura, encouraging a respectful interaction with the natural environment.
The commitment to the protection of the cave has led to a collaboration with Portuguese researchers in the installation of temperature sensors, marking a further step towards the understanding of underground ecosystems.
