Economic Compensations for Cinemas in Catalonia that Bet on Cinema in Catalan

Promotion of Movies Dubbed in Catalan

The Government is considering the possibility of offering financial compensation to cinemas in Catalonia that support films dubbed in Catalan. The aim of this measure is to prevent these productions from being relegated to less attractive schedules and from remaining on the billboards for a longer period. According to Xavier Vila, Secretary of Linguistic Policy of the Department of Culture, this initiative would focus on exhibitors who bet on Catalan, with the aim of providing them with specific aid to promote this type of cinema.

Reactions from the Sector and Application of the Catalan Cinema Law

This proposal comes after complaints from users about the brief presence of films dubbed in Catalan on the billboards and the alleged lack of application of the Catalan cinema law, which states that 25% of copies and sessions must be in Catalan. This has generated a debate on the protection of cinema in Catalan and the promotion of linguistic diversity in the country. This measure also seeks to support independent producers and ensure that productions in Catalan receive the public support they deserve.

Presence of Cinema in Catalan on Billboards

A study carried out by RAC1 reveals that films dubbed in Catalan have a limited presence on the billboards. For example, in the case of major premieres, such as ‘El regne del Planeta dels Simis’, only a small number of sessions were offered in Catalan, with a short duration on the billboards. This was also repeated with other productions, such as ‘Del Revés 2’, where only 5% of the theaters offered the version in Catalan. This situation has generated concern about the visibility and accessibility of cinema in Catalan.

Paper of the Catalan Cineclubs

Recent data on Catalan cineclubs show a significant growth in their attendance, bringing together more than 130,000 spectators in 2,258 sessions in 2023. These figures highlight the importance of cineclubs as exhibitors of Catalan cinema and in the Catalan language, highlighting the its contribution to the dissemination of productions in Catalan and to the diversity of the cinematographic scene.
