Eixos Verds de l’Eixample: From Quiet Streets to Danger Zones

From Pacific Streets to Axis of Danger

The confluence of Carrer de Consell de Cent with Comte Borrell de Barcelona houses one of the four squares that emerged from the transformation of the streets of the Eixample with the superilla model, which seeks to create green axes. This space, conceived as a safe area for pedestrians, mainly for the elderly and children, has become a problematic enclave. Despite the initial intentions to provide peace and security, the current reality is quite different, with much higher traffic than expected, jeopardizing the ability to stroll safely.

Traffic and Security Problems

Girona, Villarroel, Comte Borrell and Consell de Cent streets, despite being considered pacified areas, are far from being so. The traffic of cars, motorbikes and vans is constant, even during restricted hours. This situation has generated a lot of concern among the residents, who have seen how the spirit of the green lanes has been distorted, putting the safety of pedestrians, especially the most vulnerable, at risk. The situation is accentuated at the confluence of Consell de Cent with Comte Borrell, where vehicles cross the square and do not respect the restrictions imposed. This has generated tensions and protests from the neighborhood collective Volem Consell de Cent Verd i Viu, which denounces the massive presence of cars in a space supposedly intended for pedestrians.

Additional Problems

In addition to excessive vehicle traffic in pacified areas, bicycles and scooters have also created unease among pedestrians. The inappropriate use of enabled lanes and the lack of respect for speed restrictions have created more insecurity. Likewise, problems have been observed with tree stumps along the green axes, an issue that has generated concern, especially because of the risk it represents for the safety of users.

Vehicles that do not respect the Regulations

The neighborhood group has noticed that many loading and unloading vehicles are breaking the regulations established by restricted passage at specific times, while private cars have found an opportunity for free parking in the middle of the city. This is in addition to the presence of vehicles driving through prohibited areas, putting the safety of pedestrians and other users at risk.

Incidence of Bicycles and Scooters

In addition to the problems with cars, bicycles and scooters are also a concern. Inappropriate use of allocated lanes and disrespect for speed restrictions have created further insecurity, especially for pedestrians and vulnerable road users. This has highlighted the need to improve the control and application of current regulations.

Problems with the Tree Shrubs

Green shafts have also experienced problems related to tree bark. The fragility of these elements has generated concern and highlighted the need to improve the safety and condition of green spaces for the good of pedestrians and the environment.

Rethinking the Green Axes Model

Given the current situation, it is imperative to rethink the model of green axes to guarantee the safety and tranquility of pedestrians. There is a need for a comprehensive review of the regulations and an improvement in their control and application. In addition, it becomes necessary to address the issues related to the infrastructure and the design of the green axes to improve their functionality and safety. It is crucial to involve all the actors involved in order to find effective and lasting solutions.
