Eloi Badia: A Singular Candidate for the Parliament of Catalonia

A Political Rise from Barcelona

Eloi Badia’s political rise has been an extraordinary journey, marked by his time as a councilor in Barcelona City Council. Since his appointment as number 12 on the list led by Ada Colau in 2015, Badia has demonstrated his ability to overcome obstacles and leave an indelible mark on the city.

Despite staying at the doors of the City Council in the 2015 elections, Badia took advantage of the opportunity that Raimundo Viejo’s departure gave him to access the Plenary Council. His mandate was marked by the creation of Barcelona Energía, a pioneering company in the public sector that offers renewable energy at competitive prices.

Innovation and Sustainability in Barcelona

As councilor of Gràcia, Badia launched an ambitious improvement plan in the emblematic Park Güell, investing 25 million euros. He was also instrumental in the development of the Low Emissions Zone (ZBE) in Barcelona and its metropolitan area, a measure aimed at improving air quality.

However, the first ZBE was annulled due to judicial deficiencies, forcing the Collboni government to annul more than 140,000 fines. Despite this setback, the Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia (TSJC) did not question the regulations, which are mandatory for all municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants.

Challenges and Controversies

Badia’s career at Barcelona City Council has not been without challenges. As president of Cementiris de Barcelona, he had to face the collapse of more than 140 niches in the Montjuïc cemetery in 2017.

He also faced opposition in his attempt to municipalize the water and garbage collection system. In addition, Badia is being investigated for the alleged emission of polluting particles from the Tersa urban waste treatment plant, of which he was president.

Despite these controversies, many complaints against Badia and the Commons have been filed. In 2023, the judge filed a complaint for alleged prevarication and misappropriation of public funds related to the transfer of the Tres Lliris squat.

A New Chapter in the Parliament of Catalonia

In January 2023, Badia announced his resignation from running for a third term in Barcelona City Council. Later, he was elected deputy in Congress for the Sumar-En Comú Podem coalition.

Now, Badia embarks on a new chapter in his political career as a Commons candidate for the Parliament of Catalonia. His candidacy for Girona, together with the alliance with Aliança Catalana, represents a unique opportunity for the Commons to expand his presence in the Catalan political landscape.

With his experience in Barcelona and his commitment to innovation and sustainability, Eloi Badia is a unique candidate who promises to bring a new perspective to the Parliament of Catalonia.
