A farewell full of emotions
Family, friends and renowned personalities from the political, media and cultural spheres gathered this Sunday at the Granollers funeral home (Vallès Oriental) to pay tribute to chef Fermí Puig. This beloved chef, a pillar of traditional Catalan gastronomy, died at the age of 65 due to complications from cancer. Over the weekend, wake events were held in his honor.
A culinary and media legacy
Fermí Puig, who since 2013 managed his own restaurant on Balmes Street in Barcelona, retired just a few weeks ago after an outstanding career in the world of cooking. In addition to his work in the kitchen, Puig was known for his participation in the media, where he spread his love for gastronomy. In a brief secular ceremony, his loved ones recalled anecdotes from his life, highlighting his affable character and his passion for Catalan culture.
Fond memories and emotional speeches
Journalist Jordi Basté, a close friend of Puig, shared anecdotes and recalled his multifaceted personality: a committed Catalan fan, a passionate writer and a Barça fan known for his pessimism. During his speech, Basté highlighted how Puig used to constantly change his mind through intense debates, a characteristic that always generated smiles among those present. The professional and personal relationship that united both of them, especially through Puig’s regular collaboration on RAC1’s morning show, was also mentioned.
Anecdotes that marked his life
In his speech, Basté mentioned various memorable moments, such as a heated argument with fellow chef Santi Santamaria over a shrimp that he didn’t like, or the WhatsApp messages they exchanged until the end. He also remembered the difficult moments experienced by Barça, a team that both followed with passion. The ceremony was accompanied by the song ‘La gent que estimo’ by Oques Grasses at the entrance of the coffin, and ‘My way’ by Frank Sinatra during the exit, although bad weather forced some plans to change.
Assistants from various fields
The farewell was attended by prominent figures in the culinary field such as co-workers and his partner, Alfred Romagosa. Political figures such as Joan Laporta, president of Football Club Barcelona, Manchester City’s sporting director, Txiki Begiristain, and various members of Junts such as Jordi Turull and Jaume Giró were also present. In addition, figures from the world of communication and culture attended, including José Antich, Jaume Roures, Sergi Pàmies and Toni Clapés.
A tribute to his life and work
This tribute event to Fermí Puig not only celebrated his contribution to Catalan gastronomy, but also honored his influence on culture and media. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew and admired him, leaving an indelible mark in the culinary field and beyond.
