Employment Situation in Spain: A Step Forward in the Summer

Positive Data from the Spanish Labor Market

July has brought encouraging news in relation to employment in Spain, with a notable decrease of 10,830 people in registered unemployment. This data represents a percentage decrease of 0.42%, as communicated by the Ministry of Labor and Social Economy in its recent update.

The trend of the unemployed at the threshold of 2.5 million

The total number of unemployed people currently stands at 2,550,237, an amount approaching the psychological barrier of 2.5 million, the lowest since September 2008. This sharp downward trend is particularly notable when compared to last year’s figures.

Annual Comparison: A Memorable Context

The data for July this year is remarkably similar to the same month in 2023, but contrasts with the slight increase of 3,230 unemployed that occurred in July 2022. In an even more extreme contrast, 2021 saw to witness an unprecedented drop of 197,841 people in unemployment, thanks to the post-pandemic recovery.

Disaggregation by Gender and Seasonally Adjusted Unemployment

In addition, this last year has shown an annual decrease of 127,637 unemployed people, equivalent to 4.77% less, with a decrease of 4.62% in the case of men and 4.86% among women. In a seasonally adjusted area, the drop in the number of unemployed was 12,378.

Regional Inequalities: Catalonia Thanks for an Increase

Despite the overall positive data, the trends vary significantly between the autonomous communities. Seven regions have experienced reductions in the unemployment rate, while ten have recorded increases. The most prominent falls were in Andalusia, with 15,965 fewer people, the Canary Islands (-972) and Asturias (-963), while Catalonia was the community with the most marked increase (+2,317).

Impact among the Immigrant Population

The employment landscape for foreign workers has also shown improvements, with a reduction of 6,182 unemployed, which represents 1.8% less. Thus, the total number of unemployed immigrants stands at 336,558, a figure slightly lower compared to the previous year.
