Environmental transformation of the Vilamajor stream: A new chapter

A project with an ecological vision

Recently, works have begun for the hydraulic and environmental rehabilitation of the Vilamajor creek, especially in the section that passes by the Joan Casas school in Sant Antoni de Vilamajor. This initiative, promoted by the company Rico Furest, seeks to address various ecological and structural problems.

Highlights of the project

The project focuses on stabilizing slopes with greater vulnerability and signs of erosion, using innovative bioengineering techniques. The initiative includes revegetation of the area with native plants to create a riparian forest that improves local biodiversity.

Structural and landscape improvements

In addition, a remodeling of the riverbed is planned to optimize the hydraulic conditions and integrate the overflows so that they harmonize with the surrounding landscape. The intervention will be carried out along a 475-metre section that is essential for the community, as it connects to various services such as the school, the pavilion and the municipal swimming pool.

Previous analysis: Fundamentals of the project

Before starting the works, an exhaustive study was carried out that included the topographical, geological and hydrological analysis of the stream. This initial phase was crucial in identifying the specific needs of the area and determining the most appropriate solutions.

Identified problems

Among the problems detected are the lack of riparian vegetation, the unstable slopes, and the existence of floating and polluted water in the overflows. In addition, an inventory of tree and shrub species has been carried out, finding specimens such as bananas, elders and willows that contribute to the diversity of the ecosystem.

A project with institutional support

The budget for this environmental transformation is estimated at around 163,000 euros. The City Council, to pay for this initiative, plans to use subsidies obtained from the Generalitat and the Provincial Council, thus reflecting a commitment to sustainability and the improvement of the local natural heritage.

Looking to the future

The rehabilitation of the Vilamajor creek does not only seek to solve the immediate problems, but also aims to set a precedent for future conservation and restoration initiatives of urban natural spaces. This project is a clear example of how collaboration between institutions and companies can lead to a healthier and more sustainable environment for communities.
