ERC votes in favor of keeping the Castilian name of Cabacés

The decision of the councilors of ERC

The decision of the six ERC councilors in Cabacés has been to keep the Spanish name of the town, despite the opposition of Junts and an independent councillor. This determination contradicts the traditional name in Catalan, Cabassers, and has been interpreted as an imposition contrary to the laws of memory and linguistics.

Resistance to compliance with the law

Successive Cabacés governments have found a way to bypass the Language Policy Act since 1998, taking advantage of a gap in local legislation. This lack of compliance is not sanctioned, unlike the withdrawal of Franco place names which involves fines and deprivation of subsidies.

Consequences of resistance

While the Law of Democratic Memory foresees sanctions for not removing Francoist names, the Law of Linguistic Policy does not contemplate an action mechanism for cases like that of Cabacés. This allows the City Council to maintain a name that does not comply with the established legality.
