Europe at a key moment in its history

A critical and polarized context

Europe is at a key moment in its history. After overcoming the aftermath of the covid crisis, the continent is facing several social, economic and geopolitical challenges. In addition, there is growing political polarization with the rise of far-right parties, many of which are Eurosceptic. This critical situation marks a turning point for Europe.

European elections with high participation

The European elections will be held on June 9, and a record turnout is expected. According to the European Parliament’s latest barometer, participation in Spain could reach 70%, an increase of 15 percentage points compared to the previous elections. This would be the highest turnout since the first European elections held in the State in 1987.

Growing interest in elections

This spring’s Eurobarometer shows that the number of Europeans interested in the elections has increased to 71%, ten percentage points more than in the previous elections. This is mainly due to the turbulent context of geopolitical tensions and war conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza. 81% of Europeans surveyed consider these circumstances very relevant to the election of Europe’s representatives.

Concerns of citizens

In Spain, the main concerns of citizens are the state of public health and the fight against poverty and social exclusion. Other important topics are the economy and jobs, agricultural policy, climate change, migration and asylum management, the future of Europe, democracy and the rule of law, defense and security, the fight against terrorism, and gender equality, inclusion and diversity.

Priorities in Europe

At European level, priorities vary depending on the country. In addition to the fight against poverty and social exclusion and the state of public health, the defense and security of the European Union is a key concern for 31% of Europeans. Other important topics are the fight against terrorism, democracy and the rule of law, the future of Europe and migration.
