The passion of castles: a historical context
Since its establishment during the modern age, the Tarragona Castles Contest has become an emblematic event that attracts thousands of spectators. This event not only stands out for its competitive character, but also because of the intense passion that generates both participants and the public.
Importance of the score table
As part of this contest, the score table becomes a key element that determines the success of each gang. The different editions have seen the application of several tables, each with their own criteria that have influenced the way the castles are valued. In this first article, we will analyze the evolution of these tables from a historical and mathematical perspective, focusing on the 22 competitions that have been held in Tarragona from 1980 to 2024.
Analysis of old contests (1980-2004)
In the period between 1980 and 2004, thirteen competitions were held that marked the beginning of these competitions. Instead of focusing on each edition, we will examine the 2004 contest, which perfectly illustrates the punctuation philosophy of that time.
Characteristics of the 2004 score table
The table of that year could be summarized in three key aspects: first, it included castles ranging from 4de7 to 3de10 without handles; Secondly, each loaded castle was valued above its unloaded predecessor; And finally, the 3de9 without lining stood out as one of the most valuable castles.
Challenges and criticism
However, the score table was subject to controversy. Many participants expressed their concern about the low scoring difference between loaded and downloaded castles, which could encourage a risky competition. In addition, the need to include new castles in the score system posed an additional challenge for the organizers.
The Sector Professional Answer of Professionals
A group of journalists and informers decided to intervene, creating the Castellera Dis.20 punctuation table, which sought to balance the valuation of the castles. This initiative arose at a time when gangs needed a new perspective on score.
Reformulating score: a new approach
In the face of criticism, the organizing committee was forced to rethink the punctuation criteria. They considered two options: eliminating the rule that prioritized loaded castles or expanding the global ratio to allow a wider inclusion of castles at the table.
Finally, from the 2006 edition, we opted for a hybridized approach that sought to balance the needs of the groups with the viability of the score table.
Looking to the future
With the constant evolution of the castles and the introduction of new techniques, the punctuation system will continue to need adaptations. The importance of finding a balance between tradition and innovation is essential to ensure that the Tarragona Castles Contest continues to be a celebration of culture and casteller art.
