Evolution of the relationship between Zarzuela and Joan Carles I

The interactions between Zarzuela and Emeritus King Joan Carles I have experienced ups and downs over time. However, in recent days, a closer relationship has been noticed in their relationship. After an extensive period marked by tensions and disagreements, the connection between Joan Carles I and the Royal Family has shown signs of improvement and understanding. This new approach is also reflected in its relationship with the current monarch, Felipe VI, with whom there have been initiatives to reestablish a warmer and closer bond.

Attempts to participate

Joan Carles I has expressed his interest in attending official events of great importance, such as the swearing in of the Constitution by his granddaughter Leonor, the swearing in of the flag of Felipe VI and the commemoration of the tenth anniversary of his son’s reign. Despite these wishes, Zarzuela has rejected such requests. The justification offered has been that these events are not aimed at the emeritus kings, however, no specific reason has been presented that prohibits their attendance.

A longing for the future

According to sources close to Joan Carles I, the Zarzuela argument has not completely convinced the former monarch. Despite his discontent, he has been forced to respect the decision. However, the king emeritus maintains the hope of being able to attend important family events in the near future.

The princess at the Naval Academy

In this context, Princess Leonor’s recent visit to the Naval School of Marín has been a relevant event. Leonor will begin her third year at this institution and will prepare to embark on the Training Ship Juan Sebastián de Elcano next January. This trip is a fundamental part of her training as a midshipman, providing her with valuable experience in long-term navigation.

Zarzuela remains firm

According to information from Monarquía Confidencial, Joan Carles I would like to be present at the boarding of his granddaughter. He is considering requesting permission from Zarzuela to attend this important event. ‘It is something that is in mind as the date approaches. Although it is still early, the emeritus is still waiting for a time to come when he can have that opportunity for a public meeting with the princess,’ sources close to him have pointed out.

Zarzuela’s response

However, La Zarzuela has been clear in its response, reiterating its refusal. The reason is the same as always: such events are not intended for emeritus kings, much less if they are related to Leonor. There is reluctance on the part of Queen Letizia, who does not want the emeritus to get involved in the life of the heiress. In addition, she plans to protect the image and future reign of Felipe VI.
