Explore the Fascinating World of Science at Pint of Science 2024

An Immersive Scientific Experience in a Relaxed Environment

Get ready to immerse yourself in a world of scientific discoveries at Pint of Science 2024, an international science outreach festival held simultaneously in 26 countries on five continents. Since its inception in 2013, Pint of Science has captivated audiences with its unique approach of bringing scientific research to everyday people in a casual and welcoming environment: bars!

This year, Palma joins the celebration for the fourth time, offering a program packed with fascinating talks given by renowned scientists from the Institute of Interdisciplinary Physics and Complex Systems (IFISC, CSIC-UIB), the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) and the Mediterranean Institute of Advanced Studies (IMEDEA, CSIC-UIB).

A Window to the Most Recent Scientific Advances

For three exciting days, from May 13 to 15, the A Tres Bandas café in Plaza de Barcelona will become a center for scientific dissemination. Thirteen speakers will share their most innovative research and discoveries, covering a wide range of topics that will pique your curiosity.

From Mediterranean biodiversity and the complexities of social networks to the mysteries of cell biology, the nature of pain and the personality quirks of fish, each talk promises an in-depth and accessible exploration of the latest scientific advances.

Monday, May 13: Unraveling Complex Systems

The IFISC will open the festival with a series of talks that will transport you to the fascinating world of complex systems. David Abella will reveal how the principles of gas mechanics can illuminate urban dynamics, shedding light on issues such as segregation and mobility in cities.

José Antonio Almanza will delve into the enigma of Maxwell’s demon, exploring the relationship between entropy and information and its impact on thermodynamics. Beatriz Arregui will analyze high-order interactions in social networks, highlighting their importance in the structure of these networks.

Finally, Àlex Giménez will demonstrate how artificial intelligence and satellite observation are revolutionizing the conservation of Posidonia oceanica seagrass beds in the Mediterranean.

Tuesday, May 14: Exploring the Frontiers of Biology and Learning

UIB researchers will take over on Tuesday the 14th, offering a look at advances in biology and learning. Andreu Miquel Amengual will present extracellular vesicles derived from platelets, explaining their role as cellular messengers and their potential in regenerative medicine to treat chronic wounds.

Marta Rivera will take us on a journey to the heart of language learning, revealing how this process offers a unique window into understanding how the brain works. Carolina Sitges and Núria Garcia will explore the complex nature of pain, from its perception by our body to its processing by our brain and the factors that modulate this perception.

Tomás Lejarraga will conclude the day with an exploration of how we learn and make decisions based on our experiences in a world full of uncertainty, highlighting some phenomena that make this learning difficult.

Wednesday, May 15: Science for Life and the Environment

The IMEDEA will close the festival on Wednesday the 15th with talks focused on science for life and the environment. Andrea Anton will address marine invasive species, focusing on those affecting the Balearic Islands, and examine both the problems and possible solutions.

Josep Alòs will explore diversity and chronotypes in fish, showing how fishing practices are altering their natural activity patterns and the ecological and economic implications of this.

Alejandro Valenzuela will take us on an archaeozoological tour of the Mediterranean, revealing the secrets that the bones of the islands keep about the history of the island fauna and the human impact. Finally, Isabel Donoso will explain the architecture of biodiversity, highlighting the importance of ecological interactions such as pollination and seed dispersal, and how global change affects these vital processes.

An Unparalleled Scientific Dissemination Experience

Pint of Science is not just a popular science festival; It is a unique opportunity to connect with researchers first-hand, ask questions and delve into the fascinating mysteries of the world around us. With free admission and a casual atmosphere, this event is perfect for people of all ages and levels of scientific knowledge.

Whether you are a science enthusiast or simply curious about the world around you, Pint of Science 2024 offers you an unforgettable experience. Get ready to explore, learn and marvel at the latest scientific advances!
