A literary and personal journey
Víctor Recort, born in Sant Boi de Llobregat in 1990, presents himself as a writer and father of two children. He is currently collaborating with ‘El Quadern’ in El País and works as a cultural programmer at the Finestres bookstore. His new work, ‘Els Crits’, is the second novel published in Catalan after ‘Aerial Bridge’, and has recently been awarded the Documenta 2024 ex aequo prize.
Linguistic transition and identity
Although ‘Game Boy’ was his debut in Spanish, Recort emphasizes that the cultural references of his work were deeply rooted in the Catalan imaginary. As his career evolved, he felt the need to write in Catalan, especially after the birth of his first child. His decision to make the change was driven by the desire to guarantee that the native language of his children was Catalan.
Reconciliation with roots
Recort explains that at a time when independence politicians seemed to disappoint expectations, he realized the importance of deepening their cultural roots. He took a determined step to abandon the Spanish literary system in favor of his Catalan identity, a transition that is reflected in his work ‘Aerial Bridge’.
Referents and influences
‘The shouts’ presents a character that relates to the world of television, in particular with a program that evokes ‘Crónicas Marcianas’. Recort uses this benchmark to explore the interaction between cultures and languages, reflecting the coexistence between Catalans and Spaniards in the same entertainment space. This dynamic is essential to understand the characters of his novel.
Exploration of masculinity
The role of the three protagonists allows to reflect on contemporary masculinity. Through his experiences, he addresses topics such as social pressure and male group dynamics, questioning the true nature of men’s relationships in a world where vulnerability is often hidden.
Paternity and reflection
Paternity is another of the central themes of ‘The shouts’. Recort shares that being a father involves a constant review of one’s childhood and experiences. His children have led him to reflect on his family roots and the legacy he wants to leave them, both emotionally and culturally.
The importance of communication
Recort emphasizes that communication with children is essential. In a world full of distractions, having significant conversations with children can be a challenge, but it is essential to creating solid bonds. Through his writing, he seeks to better understand his own relationship with fatherhood and how he affects his literary work.
Looks to the future
The future of Catalan literature and the role of writers in society are the topics that concern RECORT. As his career progresses, he will continue to explore the complexities of identity, language and family in a constantly changing world. His work promises to be a reflection of this personal and literary journey, and an invitation to reflect on human relationships in a diverse and dynamic environment.
