A sermon that marked an age
Girona is preparing to remember a fundamental moment of its history: on April 6, 1925, when Mossèn Bartomeu Barceló i Tortella uttered a memorable sermon from the cathedral. In a context of repression under the dictatorship of Primo de Rivera, his words claimed justice and freedom for the Catalan people, a message that did not go unnoticed.
An act of courage and resistance
The chronicles of the time tell that, due to his passionate speech, Barceló was immediately detained. The same evening, he was transferred to prison, but escaped to France with the help of Bishop Juli de Carselade, where he continued to defend Catalan culture and identity without hesitation.
The Cultural Legacy of Barceló
Not only was Bartomeu Barceló a defender of the Catalan language, but also used poetry as a tool for struggle. His literary work is still a benchmark for many, and that is why the tribute act will not be limited to speeches.
A tribute to Memory
The commemoration will include prominent parliaments, such as that of the writer Bartomeu Mestre, who will delve into the life and impact of Barceló. The intervention of Gemma Geis, Vice -Caldessa of Girona and great -grandfather of the priest Camil Geis, who witnessed the historical sermon, is also expected.
A meeting of remembrance and solidarity
Family and friends of Barceló, from Felanitx and other localities such as Perpignan and Terrassa, will join the celebration to express their support. This meeting is an opportunity to strengthen the ties between the communities that have been influenced by their legacy.
Catalan of Mallorca: a motto that resonates
The event will be developed under the slogan ‘Catalan of Mallorca’ (#CatalanDemallorca), a phrase that Barceló used to identify in his writings. This initiative, promoted by members of the civil society of Felanitx and Girona, seeks to reaffirm the Catalan cultural identity in a time of celebration and reflection.
Art and music to complete the tribute
In addition to the speeches, the event will include a selection of poems from the anthology of Barceló, published in 1974, which will be performed in a poetic and musical atmosphere. Thus, the event will not only remember the figure of Barceló, but will also celebrate the richness of his work.
