Innovative Initiative for Environmental Education
The Lleida Municipality has launched an ambitious plan to revitalize the playgrounds of 14 primary schools, with the aim of creating biodiversity spaces that enrich the urban ecosystem. Through this initiative, it is intended to transform these environments into true natural oases that promote local flora and fauna.
Visit and Project Details
Recently, Begoña Iglesias, first deputy mayor and head of Sustainability, visited the Escola Països Catalans to announce that the project will be put out to tender shortly, with the intention of starting the works in January and finishing them within a period of two months.
Environmental and Educational Impact
With a total area of 2,300 m² of renaturalized courtyards, the project foresees the planting of more than 3,000 plants and 98 trees, prioritizing native species adapted to the climate of Lleida. This will not only improve the aesthetics of the courtyards, but will also contribute to the environmental quality of the city.
The Role of Educational Centers
The schools involved in this initiative include names such as Sant Josep de Calassanç, Joan Maragall and Magí Morera i Galícia, among others. Each school will receive a personalized approach according to its needs, with the aim of creating a learning environment that promotes climate comfort and sustainability.
Didactic Activities and Student Involvement
In addition to the creation of green spaces, a working group is being formed with teachers to develop educational proposals focused on biodiversity. Students will actively participate in the maintenance of their new green spaces, thus promoting practical and direct learning with nature.
A Funded and Sustainable Project
The budget for these improvements amounts to €235,149.10, with funding from the Biodiversity Foundation and support from the European Union through the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan. This investment reflects Lleida’s commitment to sustainability and environmental preservation.
Biodiversity Corners: A New Opportunity
In addition to the renaturalization project, the City Council will launch Biodiversity Corners, aimed at Nursery Schools and other centers that have not been able to participate. This initiative will provide plants, small trees and materials to promote green spaces, with the aim of involving more institutions in the creation of a greener educational environment.
Reflections on the Future of Environmental Education
With this initiative, Lleida positions itself as a pioneering city in environmental education, promoting a more sustainable and conscious future among new generations. Direct interaction with nature will not only enrich the educational experience, but will also contribute to the construction of a more environmentally friendly society.
