Ignasi Riera: a literary and political legacy that lasts

A life dedicated to letters and politics

The writer and journalist Ignasi Riera has left an immeasurable gap in the Catalan literary world with his recent disappearance at the age of 85. His death has been confirmed by Catalunya Ràdio and the Association of Writers in Catalan Language (AELC), an entity that recognized his contribution as an honorary and secretary partner during the 1980’s.

A prolific and diverse work

Riera was a prolific author, with more than 50 works that include novels, essays and short stories. Among his most prominent creations are ‘Honorable Mr. R ‘, awarded with the Andrómina de Narrativa Prize in 1980, and’ The clock of the Pont d’Esplugues’, which received the Ramon Llull Prize in 1984. Its capacity to capture the human essence through its pen won a pre -eminent place in Catalan literature.

Academic training and professional career

With a solid academic training, Riera was a degree in philosophy and letters, theology and Romanesque philology. He left the seminar in 1969 to settle in Cornellà de Llobregat, where he spent 15 years in politics as a Culture Councilor for the PSUC. His political career also included the post of Member of the Parliament of Catalonia for ICV in two stages.

Beyond literature: translator and commentator

In addition to his literary career, Riera acted as an adult teacher and was a publishing technician for 15 years. His passion for the Catalan language led him to translate works by authors such as Célestin Freinet and to be a commentator on radio stations both nationally and stately.

Riera also left his mark on the press, collaborating with publications such as ‘El País’ and ‘L’Avui’, as well as in cultural and scientific magazines such as ‘El Temps’ and ‘Serra d’Or’. His participation in magazines such as ‘New Horizons’ and ‘Change Table’ demonstrates his versatility and commitment to the cultural world.
