A new project for Urquinaona’s interchange
The interchange that connects lines 1 and 4 of the Urquinaona metro is on the way to a significant transformation. With a planned budget of one million euros, the Department of Territory, Housing and Ecological Transition has given the green light to the drafting of a project that will define the necessary measures to improve the accessibility of the transport system. The works, which are estimated at a total of 45 million euros, will be held for the next 12 months.
Commitment to inclusive public transport
Minister Sílvia Paneque emphasized that this initiative is part of the Generalitat’s strategy to build a public transport system that is efficient and accessible to all citizens. Currently, 95% of the Barcelona metro network is accessible, with 155 stations adapted to the needs of people with reduced mobility.
Statistics of uses and needs
Each year, the Urquinaona interchange records an impressive volume of 23 million trips, which emphasizes the need to ensure that this space is accessible to everyone. The new project provides for a remodeling of the lobbies and platforms of the two lines, as well as the implementation of elevators and ramps that facilitate access between the street and the platforms.
Accessibility Objectives and Future of Public Transportation
The Department of Territory, Housing and Ecological Transition has reaffirmed its commitment to improving accessibility to the metro network as one of its priorities. With an investment of € 115 million prior for the coming years, the goal is to achieve 100% accessibility at all stations.
Current and future projects
Recently, adaptations to the Spanish interchange (L1 and L3) have been completed, and the remodeling works are currently underway at Clot station (L1) and at the Ciutadella – Vila Olímpica (L4) and Verdaguer (L4) stations. In addition, works are being tendered to adapt the Sants Square Station (L5) and projects are being developed to adapt the remaining stations, including Verdaguer (L5) and Plaça de Sants (L1).
Improvements in adapted stations
In addition to the new adaptations, improvement works are being carried out at already accessible stations, such as Sants Estación, which will improve the itineraries between the L5 and the trains, and Passeig de Gràcia, which will facilitate the connections between lines L3 and L4. Other seasons such as Peace (L4) and Catalonia (itineraries between L1 and L3) are also in the spotlight for additional improvements.
A vision to future
The transformation of Urquinaona and the other stations is only part of the long -term commitment to ensure that the Barcelona public transport system is not only efficient, but also inclusive, ensuring that each traveler can access their destinations without obstacles.
