A shared approach in Spain and the European Union
In the field of road safety in Spain, the General Directorate of Traffic is the entity in charge. However, in recent years, the European Union has shown a marked interest in strengthening road safety measures in its member states.
An ambitious European goal
The European Union has set as a goal the eradication of deaths on the roads of the member states by the year 2050. Despite the decrease in accidents in recent years, this objective arouses a high degree of ambition, considering the persistent occurrence of road accidents throughout Europe.
Road safety reforms
Recently, the European Parliament approved a reform focused on addressing road safety. Within this reform, modifications are contemplated, such as the extension of the driver’s license renewal period in member states. This change is relevant for Spain and its road legislative framework.
Driving license renewal
One of the key proposals is the extension of the validity period of the driving license to 15 years, as opposed to the current 10 years on Spanish roads. In addition, it is proposed that drivers themselves evaluate their ability to continue driving, emphasizing individual responsibility over state or European guidelines.
New rules for young drivers
Another proposal is that 17-year-olds can obtain a driving license, but they must be accompanied by an adult driver over 25 years of age who holds the license, until they reach the age of majority. These measures seek to promote safer driving during the learning stage.
