A new age for cooling
The cold chain has a monumental opportunity to feed 950 million people in the first world annually. This possibility is explored through the Fred-Hub, a project that combines public and private efforts with the aim of redefining the functioning of the sector.
Collaboration between experts
The initiative was presented at the Nau d’Ako, a pioneering company in cooling technology, accompanied by the Polytechnic University of Catalonia and the City Council of Sant Pere de Ribes. The event was attended by prominent figures such as the Minister of Business and Labor, Miquel Samper, and the Mayor, Ana Herrera.
Objectives and perspectives
The Fred-Hub aims to create an open innovation ecosystem that fosters digitalization and reduces both food waste and CO₂ emissions. With an initial investment of more than 10 million euros, the initiative seeks to attract new companies and enhance research.
Environmental Impact I Social
Estimates indicate that the project could reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 65% and reduce food losses by 90%. Currently, 30% of food is wasted, an alarming data that promotes this new proposal.
University as a fundamental pillar
From the beginning, the UPC has been a key ally, providing knowledge and resources to ensure that the cold-hub not only improves efficiency, but also generates well-paid jobs and enables new generations.
The value of knowledge transfer
Climent Molins, Vice -Rector of the UPC, emphasized the importance of knowledge transfer as a driving force behind the project, believing that collaboration between academic institutions and companies can have a positive impact on society.
Expansion of industrial infrastructure
During the event, an extension of the industrial land of Vilanoveta was also announced in 50,000 square meters, as part of a wider effort to re -industrialize the region and diversify economic activity.
The Government’s response
Minister Samper supported this initiative, emphasizing that the Fred-Hub is a promising project that could have a significant impact on the local economy, provided that the budget conditions allow it.
Final reflections
The Fred-Hub is a unique opportunity not only for the refrigeration industry, but also for food sustainability and the creation of a more green and efficient future. As this project progresses, its ability to transform the agri -food sector will become a palpable reality.
