A Comprehensive Plan for Traffic Improvement
The Catalan Traffic Service (SCT) has launched an ambitious initiative to address the daily mobility challenges of the AP-7, the neural axis that connects Catalonia with France and the Valencian Country. With a noticeable increase in traffic and a high number of incidents, the aim is to avoid the long queues that have become a constant.
Proposed Measures and their Implementation
Among the planned actions, the establishment of a variable speed circuit that will extend between Maçanet de la Selva and Vendrell, with a length of approximately 100 kilometers, stands out. This project will include advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence cameras that will help predict and manage holdups.
New System of Traffic Lights to Regulate Access to the Motorway
With the intention of more efficiently controlling the flow of vehicles, a traffic light system will be installed to allow gradual access of vehicles to AP-7. This system will start tests at one of the most strategic entry points, ensuring that vehicles access the track in 10 second intervals.
A Proactive Approach to Dealing with Disaster
The accident rate in the first months of 2024 has highlighted the need for immediate measures, with two fatalities recorded during this period alone. This contrasts with last year, when a total of eight fatalities were recorded.
We control the Trucks
To improve road safety, it is planned to install radar cameras in heavy traffic areas, to ensure that trucks travel in the right lane, a measure that seeks to increase regulatory compliance in this aspect.
Optimization of the Road Network
In addition to the measures mentioned above, the creation of additional lanes during weekends and dates with more traffic, as well as the implementation of speed reduction policies in specific sections of the AP-7, have been planned. This includes the lifting of the speed limit of 100 km/h in certain hours on the route between Martorell and Gelida.
The Vision of the Future: A Safer Mobility
The measures planned for 2024 and 2025, with an investment of 8.3 million euros, not only seek to reduce road collapse, but also improve the overall safety of the highway. The planned actions also put in place the appropriate means to ensure that both daily and occasional users benefit from safer and more efficient routes.
